Gate to Nowhere

the dogs made me!

the dogs made me!

The dogs made me put up this gate to nowhere. It's actually not my gate - it's my parents'. My mom is a collector. She found this gate on the property when my parents bought the house 20 years ago. She tucked it away until she figured out how she wanted to use it.

The dogs made her drag it out. I lived on my parents' property in their carriage house for a number of years. The garden where this gate is located is a direct line out my parents' back door over to my carriage house. The dogs ... 3 of them ... none of which weighs under 80lbs ... would cut through the garden either running from my parents' house to my house or vice versa.

My mom was irritated that they were ruining her garden. And then she remembered the gate. So my dad made a post, sunk it and attached the gate. And that became the obstruction that stopped the dogs from running through the garden.

In the picture, the gate is behind a planted table ... another neat thing my mom did recently. It's an outdoor table and set of two chairs. The glass broke on the table. Rather than replace the glass, my mom had the brilliant idea to plant the table. So my dad constructed the "box" or container that sits in the frame of the table and in the frame of the chairs, and then my mom planted them. Kind of cool, I think. :)

That's my mother for you
by: Wendy

Thanks Leslie. My mom is fantastic at the creativity thing. She's taken quite a few blue ribbons at the Philadelphia Flower Show over the years. Throughout her gardens, she has fixed old benches or chairs, painted them bright colors and placed them in the gardens even though they're not safe to sit on. (Okay, my Dad fixes them ... but it's mom's idea!) She took an old curved window, put mirrors in where the glass should normally be, attached a planter and hung it on the pool house wall. It looks exactly like a window! She takes old broken pots and uses them as markers to label various plantings. At one point there was a claw-foot tub in one of the gardens! And it didn't look trashy. I'm constantly amazed at the things she comes up with and how she manages to recycle.... But by far, this table and chairs has been the best!!!

Cool planting of the chairs and table
by: Lesley

I notice that the chairs have been planted too. How creative is that! I love it. Fantastic thing to do to recycle old or damaged furniture and make a sculpture in the garden.
