Easy recipe for Rose Petal Jam. This traditional recipe for home made preserves uses fresh, rose petals right from your garden.
Rose petals have been a popular flavoring through the ages. They have been used to flavor puddings, candy, drinks, preserves, and all kinds of other dishes.
The dark red, fragrant roses are best to use in your petal jam recipe. These are the most tasty, and flavorful.
You can use other colors, such as pink roses, if you have fragrant ones, just remember that the color of the rose determines the color of the jelly.
The delicate flavor varies in strength with the scent of the petals.
This is a very fragrant jam, that reminds you of a summer day in the garden when you open the jar!
What a wonderful way to use those roses, in the making of your very own rose petal jam!
Your family will not be able to get enough of this tasty spread!
Pick fresh petals, that have not been sprayed. (Fallen petals are not recommended. Rose petals are perishable, and their flavor is quickly lost.)Remove the white bottom part of the petals with a knife or scissors, because that part is very bitter.
One medium size rose yields about a cup of petals.
Note Do not use rose petals from the florist, or garden center. Theses roses are not food grade. They may have been sprayed with dangerous pesticides!
You will need:
8 ozs. of Rose Petals (newly opened fragrant red or other colored ones)
1 Tablespoon fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 1/2 lbs. sugar

Add the petals to the pan and leave in a warm place to steep. Cover and leave for a few hours or overnight.
Place pan on low heat and simmer gently for 30 minutes, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens to a jam-like consistency.
To test if it is done, drop a spoonful on to a chilled plate.... it should set up like jam.
Allow to cool, put in small jars and cover. Enjoy!
If you are making more than you will use in a reasonable time, or for gifts, be sure to follow instructions to properly sterilize and seal the jars!
