Redbud Trees
Trees with Flowers

Redbud Trees, bloom in early Spring with purplish pink blossoms. The Eastern Redbud Tree, is one of the showiest trees with flowers, you can plant in your yard. This small showy tree, blooms in early Spring, covering the leafless branches with purple/pink blossoms.

The leaves of this spectacular tree are heart shaped, growing 2-5 inches long. Leaves start off green, and turn a dark blue/green, and a bright yellow in the fall.

The Eastern Redbud grows 20-30'. It is the state tree of Oaklahoma.

Ideal for smaller spaces, the slow-growing, compact Chinese Redbud puts on a profuse display of rose-mauve blossoms in spring. 'Don Egolf' doesn't form seed pods, so it will not spread around. Plants are adaptable to many soils, including those that tend to be dry (but avoid wet, poorly drained sites), and show some resistance to the fungal disease that attacks our native Redbud. A U.S. National Arboretum introduction.

Cercis is a small genus of about six species of deciduous trees and shrubs in the Pea family, distributed over a wide area across both coasts of North America to the Mediterranean and East Asia. Clusters of lavender-pink or white blossoms sprout right from the branches and trunks in early spring, soon followed by heart-shaped leaves. Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or dappled shade.

Oklahoma Redbud

The Oklahoma Redbud tree, Cercis reniformis, 'Oklahoma', has glossy green foliage. This redbud tree was discovered growing wild in the Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma in 1964. The Okahoma redbud is a small, deciduous understory tree

Redbud Trees grow more like a shrub than a tree, with short, spreading branches that are low to the ground. The Eastern Redbud tree dates back to Biblical times, and is also called The Judas Tree.

The purple flowers appear in April before the leaves.

It grows well from New Jersey to Florida, west to Missouri and Texas, and New Mexico.

I have two of these trees that I planted last year. I just love the delicate purple flowers in early Spring. It's such a showy tree, that if you saw one in bloom and didn't know what it was, you would be sure to ask "Whats that?" They are just so.. pretty, blooming in early Spring, when us Northerers have had about as much of Winter as we can take, and alas...here come the stunning purple blooms!!

Royal White Redbud

The Royal White Redbud, 'Cercis canadensis "Royal White", demostrates the most appealing feature of the redbud species with the showy, large white flowers in early spring. The Royal White Redbud is also a more compact tree than the Eastern Redbud. These trees are effective as a single specimen, in groupings, in a shrub border, and especially nice in woodland and naturalized type situations. It has large heart shaped leaves during the summer, and long seedpods in the fall. Red Bud trees have a yellow fall color. It has low water requirements and displays a high tolerance to salt and alkali soils. Thousands of white flowers appear in the spring before leaves appear. It can be used in full sun to part shade. Does well in many soil types, except permanently wet soils. The seed pods attract wildlife.
