Potpourri Recipes

Learn how to make Potpourri

Colorful Potpourri Recipes, made from a mixture of flower petals, herbs, and spices. Rose Petal Potpourri, Mixed Bouquet Potpourri, Traditional recipes, and more. You might even concoct your own special blend of flowers, herbs and spices using the suggestions here.

Experiment with the ingredients until you find the combination you like. Tradition flowers are rose petals and lavender flowers. Various Pinks are used for their wonderful clove-like scent. Fragrant roses are the best. Some good ones are: Fragrant cloud, Double Delight, Chrysler Imperial, Granada, Mister Lincoln, Tiffany and Perfume Delight.

Arromatic Herb Leaves include: Bay, Basil, Bee Balm, Chamomile, Mint, Oregano, Rosemary, Sage, Lemongrass

Potpourii

Fixatives include: Orris Root, and Benzoin as a general rule, add 1 1/2 ozs. (2-3 tablespoons) for every 4 cups petals and leaves.

Some Great Potpourri Recipes

Moist Rose Petal Potpourri

Ingredients:
  • 8 cups (2 qts) dry rose petals
  • Dry Lavender blossoms, dry basil, dry marjoram, dry pineapple sage, and dry rosemary in lesser amounts
  • Coarse non-iodized salt
  • 1-2 tablespoons chopped and dried tangerine peel (colored part only)
  • 1 tsp. each ground cinnamon, ground mace, ground nutmeg and ground ginger.
  • 12 whole cloves, crushed
  • 5 drops orange blossom, patchouli, or rose geranium essential oil

Mixed Bouquet Potpourri

Ingredients:
  • 4 cups mixed dried flowers such as Rose Petals, Calendular, Clove Pinks, Lavender
  • 1 cup dry Bay leaves
  • 1/4 cup Orris Root
  • 1/2 tsp, Rose, Jasimine or Lavender essential oil.
  • Assemble ingredients according to the directions of making Dry Potpourri How to make Dry Potpourri

    Traditional Potpourri

    Ingredients:
  • 3 ozs. Rose Petals
  • 2 ozs. Lavender Blossoms
  • 1 oz. each Peony, Jasmine, Chamomile, Marigold and Carnation
  • 1 oz. each Lemon Balm, Marjoram, hyssop, Rosemary and meadowsweet
  • 1/2 oz. each: Thyme, peppermint, crushed Bay Leaves
  • 1 oz of Strawflowers and Bachelor Buttons to add color
  • Next add the following:

  • 4 Tablespoons each Cinnamon, Allspice and Cloves, plus 1 Tablespoon grated Nutmeg.
  • 2 oz. each Orrisroot and crushed orange peel
  • 2 drops each of Rose, Honeysuckly, Carnation, Lilac, and Lavender Oils
