Making Homemade potpourri is easier than you might think, and it lasts for a really long time.

I like experimenting with different mixes each year, and trying new essential oils. To freshen your potpourri, a few drops of essential oil will do the trick.

Some Traditional Flowers Used for Making Potpourri

Tradition flowers for making potpourri, are rose petals and lavender flowers. Various Pinks are used for their wonderful clove-like scent.

Fragrant roses are the best. Some very good ones are:

Fragrant Cloud, Double Delight, Chrysler Imperial, Granada, Mister Lincoln, Tiffany and Perfume Delight.

Don't feel that these are the only ones to use... you can use petals from (any) rose, and if you like, include some small rose buds as well.

Choose flowers in different colors for an interesting potpourri mix.

(Don't forget that dried flower petals from roses such as red ones, will dry a much darker color).....almost black.

Leaves are Important Also

Scented leaves add interest to the mixture of flower petals. Some Aromatic Herb Leaves include... Bay, Basil, Bee Balm, Chamomile, any of the Mints, Oregano, Rosemary, Sage, and Lemongrass.

Feel free to experiment with different ones (or a mixture of different ones) until you find ones you like. (Dry leaves as you would flower petals)

Choose ones for texture, as well as fragrance. Rosemary and Sage are two of My favorites!

Don't forget to add some rose leaves!

To Make it Last..

Fixatives include: Orris Root, and Benzoin as a general rule, add 1 1/2 ozs. (2-3 tablespoons) for every 4 cups of flower petals and leaves.
