Gallica Roses

Hardy Old Garden Roses

Gallica roses, also called French roses, are said to be the oldest rose in cultivation.

Most are hardy, Old Garden roses that form low, 4-foot tall shrubs. Some can grow as high as 6 feet. They often grow wider than they do tall.

The blooms are very full, and usually double, but sometimes they are quartered.

They do well in zones 4-9.

Gallica Rose

These roses bloom only once a year, in spring or early summer. The flowers come in many shades including; pink, red, purple, and even red and white stripes.

Some are very fragrant, while others have no fragrance at all. Gallica roses grow and flower even in poor soil.

These hardy, compact plants have dark green foliage that is rough in texture. They rapidly spread by underground runners.

Some are nearly thorn-less canes, while others have canes that are a bit thorny!

Some History about Gallica Roses...

Roses in the Gallica family, are selections and hybrids of the rose known to be the oldest identified rose; Rosa gallica, also called the French rose. It once bloomed wild throughout central and southern Europe and western Asia, and blooms there still today.

Gallica roses were developed by the French hybridists in the early 19th century.

No one knows the exact origin of Rosa gallica, but it has been traced back to as early as the 12th century B.C.E when it was considered a symbol of love by the Persians.

Tips on Care of Gallica Roses....

In early spring, prune out the smallest canes. This will keep the plants open, to help cut down on disease. It could also help prevent powdery mildew, which they are sometimes prone to.

Although they are very hardy, die back is common and expected. Cut out any dead canes.
