Flower Bulbs
By planting flower bulbs, you can extend your season of bloom, thus keeping color in the garden from early Spring till Fall.
Tulips will bloom in the garden early, and add color before the roses are even starting to bud!
Companion planting, involves knowing when to plant bulbs, and where to get the most out of the flowers. For example: White Lilies (actually Lilies are not bulbs, but tubers, but I list them here just the same) look wonderful blooming beside Pink or Red colored Roses!
Know When to Plant Flower Bulbs
You'll need to know when to plant bulbs to have them bloom at the proper time. Bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodills, and Hyacinths get planted in late Fall.
Dig the planting hole, add a handful of bonemeal, put the bulbs in (pointed end up) and cover with soil. Be sure to plant in clusters of at least 5 bulbs per hole. Single specimens look lonely, and don't give you the same effect.
Water, and forget about them until Spring!
Iris's and the many different types of Lilies will come up every year.
Iris's are best planted in early Spring. They are heavy feeders, and do well with some well rotted manure or compost added to the bottom of the planting hole. Don't plant them to deep, the tubers actually sit close to the surface.
After a few years, they become overcrowed and bloom better if you divide them. (This gives you More plants!)
Either move them to a new area of the garden, or share them with other gardeners.
Lilies Also like Spring Planting. When plants get a few inches high, side dress with a handful of fertilizer.
Keep an eye out for beetles that seem to find them tasty snacks!
Other bulbs such as Dahlias, Cannas, and Gladiolla are not perennial plants. They get planted in the Spring, but have to be dug up in the fall and replanted the following Spring. Bulbs left in the ground will freeze and Not survive.
Because roses can be a bit late to start their show of flowers, it's nice to have some flowers waiting to steal the show before the roses make their grand entrance.
