Christmas Potpourri Recipe

Rose Hips and Red Flowers

Christmas Potpourri Recipe. Make your own homemade Potpourri with the look and smells of Christmas, using red flowers, and rosehips. This special blend of ingredients has an aroma that reminds one of Christmas! You know how the house smells when you put up the Christmas tree? The aroma of the tree just makes you think Christmas. This potpourri has that same "Home for the Holidays" fragrance. Recipe follows:

  • Dried Flowers (red petaled ones)
  • Rose Hips
  • Dried Orange Peels
  • Tiny Pinecones
  • Dried Pine, Cedar, Spruce etc.
  • Whole Cranberries
  • Bittersweet Berries and Leaves
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Allspice
  • Cloves
  • anise stars
  • Cinnamon Oil
  • Rock Salt (for a Fixative)

Depending on the amount of Christmas Potpourri you want to make, the amount of the ingredients will vary. I simply mix up a bunch of what I have, starting with the flower petals, rosehips, greens, cranberries, and pinecones, then I add the orange peels and the spices in gradually until I get the desired aroma. Add Cinnamon oil a few drops at a time. When adding the fixative (Rock Salt) I use about 1/2 cup per gallon of Potpourri.

To make a large batch, keep the mixed potpourri in a covered glass jar (like a large pickle jar). Allow the potpourri about 2 weeks to cure in a cool, dark place. Turn the jar every so often to mix.

This potpourri is very pretty displayed in red or clear glass containers. For the country look, display in canning jars. Tie a pretty red bow around the jar to be even more festive. If you like to make homemade gifts for giving at Christmas, put some in a decorative container, jar, or tin and give to friends and relatives.
