Christmas Potpourri Recipe

Rose Hips and Red Flowers

Use this Christmas Potpourri Recipe, to make your own homemade Potpourri with the look and smells of Christmas.

The recipe uses red flowers, and rosehips. This special blend of ingredients has an aroma that reminds one of Christmas! You know how the house smells when you put up the Christmas tree? The aroma of the tree just makes you think Christmas. This Christmas Potpourri recipe has that same 'Home for the Holidays' fragrance.

I like to save flowers for drying all season as they are available. Red  petals from roses are especially pretty and can be used in this recipe.

In late summer I collect pine cones and keep them in brown paper bags so they are available to use in any of my craft projects. This recipe for potpourri, is one such project!

If you like to make these types of homemade gifts, keep lots of rose petals and things like little pine cones on hand, so you'll have plenty when you need it.

Christmas Potpourri Recipe

Recipe follows:

  • Dried Flowers (red petaled ones) including red rose petals
  • Rose Hips
  • Dried Orange Peels
  • Tiny Pine cones
  • Dried Pine, Cedar, Spruce etc.
  • Whole Cranberries
  • Bittersweet Berries and Leaves
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Allspice
  • Cloves
  • anise stars
  • Cinnamon Oil
  • Rock Salt (for a Fixative)

Depending on the amount of Christmas Potpourri you want to make, the amount of the ingredients will vary. I simply mix up a bunch of what I have, starting with the flower petals, I use red rose petals, ( you can use any color rose petals), rose hips, greens, cranberries, and pine cones, then I add the orange peels and the spices in gradually until I get the desired aroma.

Add Cinnamon oil a few drops at a time. When adding the fixative (Rock Salt) I use about 1/2 cup per gallon of Potpourri.

To make a large batch, keep the mixed potpourri in a covered glass jar (like a large pickle jar). Allow the potpourri about 2 weeks to cure in a cool, dark place. Turn the jar every so often to mix.

This homemade potpourri with the red petals, is very pretty displayed in red or clear glass containers. It is so festive, when displayed during the Holiday season.

For the country look, display it in canning jars. Tie a pretty red bow around the jar to be even more festive.

If you like to make homemade gifts for giving at Christmas, put some of your potpourri in a decorative container, jar, or tin and give to your friends and relatives. They will love it for sure!
